How do I Avoid a Collision with a Car Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road?

Accidents caused due to the mistake of others can be disastrous. If a survey has to be believed, very few accidents are caused due to collision with cars driving on the wrong side of the road. Though the stats suggest that such events are rare, when they do occur, the damaged caused is tremendous.

How do I Avoid a Collision with a Car Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road?
Tips to Avoid a Collision
Driving on the wrong side is against the law; however you will still find people doing so. Even though you are in an emergency situation, driving on the wrong side of the road should be completely avoided.

Correct Yourself
If you see a driver driving on the wrong side, it is likely that he will pull over to the right lane i.e. the slow lane. Though this is done out of ignorance, you should try to save yourself. Get to the right side of the wrong and pull over. You can wait till the car has passed you and then begin driving.

Use High Beams
Getting the other driver’s attention is a must. You can honk to grab their attention, however this attempt may become futile if the other speeding away too fast. The other option can be to flash your high beams. Continuously keep doing this, until the driver realizes he is driving on the wrong side of the road, and will soon get into a collision, if he doesn’t pull over.

Call for Help
If all your attempts fail, you should immediately call for help before any unfortunate event takes place. Call 911 and report the incident. This way the authorities will be able to avoid any accident that may be caused. Once you have arranged for such assistance, you can get back to your vehicle and continue driving.

Such accidents, though rare, can be fatal. You need to be alert while driving, and if you spot any such incident, kindly report it.  As per National Transportation Safety Board, such accidents occur during night and during weekends. There can be navigation system alerts that inform drivers of wrong way movements on the highway, so that safety can be enhanced.

Auto Accidents Involving Uninsured Motorists

Auto Accidents Involving Uninsured Motorists
Personal injuries are caused due to negligence of someone else. However, due to their negligence, you might be hurt physically or psychologically. One such type of personal injury events are auto accidents. You can claim the uninsured motorist coverage using your automobile insurance policy.

Situations for claim
You can claim insurance for the auto accident caused by someone else only if the driver of the car has no insurance and the accident is due to the negligence of the driver. It is taken that the driver has no money and thus has no car insurance. This leaves you with no chance to sue the driver. In this situation, you would make a claim against your own car insurance company. This amount should be within the limit of your coverage.

Procedure
If you are facing a similar situation, follow the below mentioned procedure for claiming insurance. If you come to know that the driver involved in the accident is uninsured or sometimes the driver is not ready to disclose his insurance details. Then immediately inform your insurance company about this.  This conveys that you intend an uninsured claim. This step should be taken as soon as possible as some insurance companies place a deadline up to 30 days. Inform your insurer immediately that you intend to claim the insured claim against the insurer.

An uninsured driver claim is no different from the regular car accident claim. But here the claim is against your own insurance company. The procedure includes investigation of causes, disclosure of your past and present medical records and verification of the witnesses. Another limitation is that you cannot force the insurance company to settle for the amount you suggest. There is also no scope of any legal proceedings or complaints against your insurer.

An alternative is to submit your claim to an arbitration which is more informal procedure than the proceedings in the court. The case will be heard by a single or sometimes a panel of arbitrators. The case will now be settled with the arbitrator’s decision, whichever way it goes. The disadvantage with this settlement is that the loser has no or limited authority to appeal against the decision.
