How do I Avoid an Accident when Driving in Severe Weather in Clearwater?

SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVING IN BAD WEATHER
  • Slow down: when the asphalt gets slick and slippery, it takes cars a longer time to slow down and come to a complete stop. Travelling at slower speeds helps with this problem, and should be practiced on both the highways and residential roadways as well.

How do I Avoid an Accident when Driving in Severe Weather in Clearwater?
  • Increase driving distance: one of the most common accidents that occur during bad weather driving is rear-end collisions. When driving in poor weather, make sure to increase the distance in between you and the car in front of you to allow for sudden stops and plenty of time to react to them.
  •  Turn on your headlights: One of the most widely ignored safety tips out there, when it is raining, no matter how severe, one should have their headlights on even if it’s in the middle of the day. This increases your personal visibility and your visibility to other drivers on the road.
  • Avoid changing lanes when possible: despite the urge to switch lanes in the hunt of the finding the quickest moving lane when traffic is backed up due to bad weather, unsafe lane changes can become even more unsafe when the roads are slick.
  • Approach intersections with caution: other drivers may or may not stop when arriving at an intersection for a few reasons, such as the weather being so bad they have trouble seeing the red light, or due to the slick roads they are unable to slow down in enough time before they reach the intersection. Make sure to take extra caution when about to cross through an intersection and check both ways for rogue vehicles.
  • Keep windows clear: make sure your wiper blades are in good enough shape to handle a Florida torrential downpour. Wiper blades in poor condition can seriously hinder one’s ability to see when driving through a rainstorm.
  • Keep an emergency kit handy: for when Mother Nature gets really angry, make sure to have an emergency kit handy packed with enough equipment to restart your car, fix a flat, or get you through a few nights.

Thousands upon thousands of car crashes occur each year regardless of inclement weather.  It is better to be safe than sorry so we advise our clients to exercise due caution when adverse weather conditions exist.  Remember, no matter how safe you are, the driving habits of others may have an impact on your safety.  Take responsibility for your own safety and adhere to safe driving habits, especially when  bad weather strikes.
